Changes to Organic & Paid Search Results Appearance

We’ve just read a Tweet by the SEO guys at Moz.com, who have linked to a news article on The SEM Post, which states that Google has made slight changes to the layout of it’s search results pages (SERPs). I have checked this out for myself and it is true.

What have they done?

Google has increased the width of the left-hand column of it’s search results pages (the column which contains organic search results, there is also a narrower column on the right hand side which sometimes contains ads or map results).

Google Search Results Changes

Why does this matter?

Due to the widening of the page column, we can now fit more characters into the snippets of text which Google displays about your website (the meta title, URL and description). This might not seem like a big thing, but for an SEO it is important because these snippets are a vital part of optimisation. They are the first bit of content a user sees about your website, and can be the difference between a user clicking through to your site or a competitor.

What do you need to do?

Nothing major. If we provide SEO services for you, we already know about this and can take it into account when we optimise your page meta titles and descriptions. If you don’t have SEO services from us, give us a call and we will tell you how we can help you climb the Google ladder!
